Turnkey Solutions for Groundfish -Onboard Fresh

Fish Hold Robotics

Option to fully automate fish hold, eliminating back-breaking work and increasing efficiency.

Rapid Computerized Visioning

Computerized vision technology detects species, size-grades fish and creates basis for full product traceability on individual level.

Optimized Washing & Bleeding

Efficient washing and bleeding technology based on first-in, first-out principle delivers higher end-product quality.

No Need for Ice

SUB-CHILLING™ process turns product into its own refrigerant, which makes ice irrelevant—reducing transport costs, lowering carbon footprint and resulting in far superior product.

Customizable Builds

Solution is customizable for a range of applications, from basic builds to highly advanced, large-scale systems.

Regulated Cooling & Rigor Mortis

Precision temperature regulation offers control over rigor mortis process to maximize product quality in terms of gaping, texture and drip loss.

Skaginn 3X has taken its revolutionary technology in onshore groundfish processing and adapted it for onboard applications. In addition, onboard-specific innovations like fish hold robotics and SUB-CHILLING™ have made huge strides in improving transportation costs, worker safety and the industry’s carbon footprint at sea.

Although the Skaginn 3X solution for fresh groundfish at sea is optimized for onboard applications, the system maintains the same high standards of automation, energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements that Skaginn 3X is known for.

System Overview

The Skaginn 3X turnkey solution for groundfish onboard fresh processing is highly customizable. Below is an example of the buildout for HB Grandi’s state-of-the-art fresh fish trawler Engey RE 91, which boasts the world’s first entirely automated fish hold. It should be noted, however, that the solution offers great flexibility and is invariably configured to meet each client’s particular needs by the Skaginn 3X team of engineers and designers in close collaboration with the client.

1. Catch enters processing deck and goes to gutting line
  • Seven stations with ergonomic height adjustment
  • Processing flows for groundfish (cod, haddock, saithe, etc.) and redfish
  • Five onward lines from each station: roe, liver, entrails, gutted groundfish and redfish
2. Vision Whole Fish Grader uses computerized visioning to grade groundfish for size, weight and species
  • Compatible all major groundfish species with 99% accuracy
  • Creates record of individual fish, creating basis for full traceability
  • Rapid flowthrough keeps system at optimal capacity
  • No operator required, saving on labor
3. Redfish Grader uses species-specific V-grading conveyors to sort mechanically by size
  • High capacity at 15 tons per hour
  • Flexible size-grading
  • Grading improves filleting accuracy and product yield
4. FIFO Bleeding Wheel buffers and bleeds product as it accrues large batches
  • Supported by first-in, first-out (FIFO) principle
  • Gentle current and tumbling ensures optimal and efficient bleeding
  • Fully programmable
  • Compact design ideal for onboard applications
5. Revolutionary SUB-CHILLING™ system puts product into ideal state for transport and further processing
  • Product leaves system unfrozen with a core temp of -1°C to -0.5°C
  • Product becomes its own refrigerant, eliminating need for ice
  • No ice cuts transport weight by 12-15%—enables longers fishing trips, saves considerably on fuel and labor, slashes carbon footprint
  • Reduces filleting defects and minimizes gaping
  • Extends shelf by approximately 4+ days
6. ValuePump™ sets new standard in by-product logistics
  • Brings separated liver and roe to tub-loading
  • Combines conveyance with product treatments (chilling, surface disinfection, etc.) in a single process
  • Closed, low-pressure system is gentle and hygienic
  • Replaces belts and tubs with value-added conveyance
7. Product automatically loaded in tubs and moved to cold storage with Fish-Hold Robotics
  • Self-loading and self-discharging at port
  • Efficient and gentle product handling
  • Unmanned fish hold improves working conditions
  • Supports full traceability established with Vision Grader
